What to Do If You’re Locked Out of Your Home

It can happen in an instant. You run out to the mailbox or to fetch the newspaper and before you know it, your front door has blown shut, locking you out with no way to get back inside. However you get locked out, the results are the same–stress, worry, and a lot of inconvenience for you. However, you don’t have to panic if this happens to you. Here’s what you need to do if you find yourself locked out of your home.

Call for help

If your home is locked up tight and there’s no one inside who can let you back in, hopefully you’ll at least have access to a phone (your cell phone, a neighbour’s phone) so you can call a housemate or relative with a spare key to come and let you back inside. It’s annoying–especially for whoever has to bring you a key–but it’s quicker and less expensive than calling a locksmith.

If you can’t get a friend to help

It’s a good idea to keep a spare key somewhere in case of emergencies, but if the person holding that key can’t get to you, you’re on your own. After you’ve checked every door and ground-floor window to make sure you really don’t have another way in, you can attempt to break into your own house with one of several methods.

● Older doorknobs may be pried open with blunt force with a screwdriver or crowbar, but you risk damaging your lock and door.
● You could try the ‘credit card’ trick, assuming you didn’t leave your wallet inside (with your keys).
● You could remove the doorknob, if you have a toolbox handy.

A better bet would be to call a local locksmith, since they’ll be able to get you back inside your house quickly and without damaging your door.

In future, the wisest thing to do would be to never get locked out of your house again, but life’s not always ‘preventable.’ Instead, consider keeping a spare key with a trusted neighbours or in a ‘hideakey’ device, but make sure that it is well-hidden. Thieves know what to look for and can spot these devices quickly, making your home a potential target.

You could opt for keyless door locks. They’re becoming a popular choice in home security because they can be operated with your cell phone or even biometrically, with a fingerprint.
